Review: City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare

Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry
Publication Date: May 8th, 2012

The demon Lilith has been destroyed and Jace freed from captivity. But when the Shadowhunters arrive, they find only blood and broken glass. Not only is the boy Clary loves missing, so is the boy she hates: her brother Sebastian, who is determined to bring the Shadowhunters to their knees.

The Clave's magic cannot locate either boy, but Jace can't stay away from Clary. When they meet again Clary discovers the horror Lilith's magic has wrought - Jace and Sebastian are now bound to each other, and Jace has become a servant of evil. The Clave is determined to destroy Sebastian, but there is no way to harm one boy without destroying the other.

Only a few people believe that Jace can still be saved. Together, Alec, Magnus, Simon, and Isabelle bargain with the sinister Seelie Queen, contemplate deals with demons, and turn at last to the merciless, weapon-making Iron Sisters, who might be able to forge a weapon that can sever the bond between Sebastian and Jace. If the Iron Sisters can't help, their only hope is to challenge Heaven and Hell - a risk that could claim their lives.

And they must do it without Clary. For Clary is playing a dangerous game utterly alone. The price of losing not just her own life, but Jace's soul. She's willing to do anything for Jace, but can she still trust him? Or is he truly lost? What price is too high to pay, even for love?

Love. Blood. Betrayal. Revenge. Darkness threatens to claim the Shadowhunters in the harrowing fifth book of the Mortal Instruments series.

So, um, I've publicly stated many, many times that I don't think The Mortal Instruments series is as good as The Infernal Devices.  Of course, I've always LIKED the former (Cassie Clare is an absolutely brilliant author), but I really LOVE the latter.  Well, I can officially say, after reading City of Lost Souls, that I now LOVE The Mortal Instruments as well.  The books in this series get exponentially better as the the series unfolds, which is a feat in and of itself, because let's face it, the first book, City of Bones was great!

So, City of Lost Souls?  Well, it picks up where its predecessor, City of Fallen Angels (read my review HERE), ends.   Jace has disappeared into oblivion with the sinister and evil Sebastian, after saving his life. He is nowhere to be found; the Silent Brothers can't find him, nor can The Clave, Magnus, Clary, or anyone else.  Shadowhunter magic isn't helping, not even dark magic is doing the trick, and everyone is worried.  Jace's friends and family are worried for him, The Clave is most concerned with eliminating Sebastian, even at the expense of Jace's life...  When Jace finally turns up, he isn't the Jace we all know and love.  Instead he is, through Lilith's binding magic, Sebastian's pawn, and Sebastian has a truly evil plan that Jace now thinks he agrees with.  Clary realizes all of this and feels compelled to save the one she loves, a need to bring the true Jace back, at any cost, putting herself, her friends and family,  humanity as a whole, and the life she has grown to know and love in very grave danger.

There were a lot of things I loved about this book.  First and foremost, is Cassie's writing.  Seriously, she could write a guide to auto mechanics and I would greedily read it.  She's THAT good.  If you haven't read anything by her yet, you NEED to run out and buy one of her books NOW (I suggest Clockwork Angel because it's a better 1st of the series book than City of Bones).  She does her research and because of it her world building is some of the best I've ever read.  She immerses herself in the world she is writing, and it totally comes out on the page.  She also uses such beautiful language; her books are full of wonderful literary quotes, relevant verses from religious texts, and an almost lyrical style of writing.  I tend to slow-read her books because I want to savor every page (especially when I know it will be at least a year until I get to read more of her delectable writing).  When I was reading this book, there were several parts that had me going back to reread because I loved being a part of the scene that was unfolding.  It doesn't get much better than that!

But it does... As fabulous as Cassie's worlds are, her characters are just as great!  Most authors focus on the main couple, and while many are adept at developing the supporting characters and their relationships, nobody does it as well as she does.  I know Jace and Clary and the "central" figures, but I never really felt that way when I was reading this book.  Magnus plays a huge, and very important role in this book, and since he is one of favorite characters EVER, I was thrilled.  Of course, Alec also has a much bigger role as well, and although I am a little more than displeased about certain events involving the two of them, I was still super thrilled that they were so central.  We also get lots of Simon and Izzy (TOGETHER!!), and that made me super happy.  I didn't love Izzy at the beginning of the series, but she has grown on me, to become one of my favorite characters.  As for Simon, well, I've always loved him, and it made me happy that he played such a critical role in this book, following his majorly awesome role in the last one.  Then there's the deliciously evil Sebastian, the too-cute-for-words Maia and Jordan, manipulative Camille,  and an even-more-mysterious-than-the-others Silent Brother Zachariah.  Let's just say that the characters RULE.

Another thing I loved about this book was the direction the story took.   Jace and Clary have overcome some serious relationship obstacles, and I really didn't think Cassie could have much more in her arsenal to stand between them, and then she pulls out this little bag of tricks and it blew me away.  Not only does she have a brilliant imagination, but she doesn't hold anything back; she is SO not afraid to make her reader uncomfortable. (Let me tell you, Sebastian made me a little more than uncomfortable a few times!)  The plot and pacing of this book kept me reading long into the night, constantly in a state of suspense and disbelief...  This book is full of emotional tension, and it builds and builds as the story progresses, ending in Cassie's signature style, with a huge reveal that will leave your mouth hanging open.  Once again, I found myself cursing her for her crazy cliffhangers.  When I found out that it will be almost TWO years (yes, you read that right... March 19th, 2014 is the expected release date of City of Heavenly Fire) for the conclusion of this series, I almost cried!

I think it's pretty clear that I think City of Lost Souls is made of amazing with awesome-sauce on top...  Again, if you've never read anything by Cassie Clare, you are seriously missing out, and need to get on this ship NOW.  You won't be sorry!

My Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ +++

Grade Level Recommendation:  There are some pretty hot almost-sex scenes in this book, as well as some drinking and drug use (if you consider "fairy drugs" drugs), and of course, violence galore.  This book is definitely a bit darker than most of the others as well.  I think this book is appropriate for grades 7 and up (ages 12+).

WWW (22) and Waiting On Wednesday (January 4th, 2012) AND Cover Reveal: City of Lost Souls by Cassandra Clare

W. W. W. Wednesday is hosted by Should Be Reading a great blog that I subscribe to. Here's how it works... Each Wednesday I will answer the following questions:

What are you currently reading?

What did you recently finish reading?

What do you think you'll read next?

With the  holidays, my weekly memes fell by the wayside, but now that we're through all that madness, and my three monsters are back in school, I can be on top of them again.  I'm really excited about the books coming out in 2012!

What are you currently reading?

The International Kissing Club by Ivy Adams~ I thought this was going to be a lame Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants rip-off, but it's actually quite different and very cute so far.  Stay tuned!
New Girl by Paige Harbison~ A modern retelling of Daphne du Maurier's classic Rebecca.  So far, it's sticking to the original pretty well, but I still like Rebecca better.  The jury is still out...
A Need So Beautiful by Suzanne Young~ I'm listening to the audio of this awesome book and it's okay.  I think I prefer reading the print version though; the narrator's voice is kind of annoying...

What did you recently finish reading?

Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi~ What a way to kick off the new year!  This book has totally lived up to the hype.  It is an awesome Dystopia!  This book came out yesterday, and you all should really get a copy!  Read my review HERE.
Legend by Marie Lu~ I listened to the audio of this and it was really, really good.  I said in my Top 25 of 2011 post that I thought this one would have made the list if I had gotten a chance to read it before the list went up; I was right.  Excellent!  Review coming soon.
Cinder by Marissa Meyer~ Another book that released yesterday, that was phenomenal. I initially didn't think it would be my thing, but it was awesome! A must read for 2012, especially if you like fairy tale retellings.  Read my review HERE.
Touch of Power by Maria V. Snyder~ I think this is Maria's best book yet.  If you are a fan of High Fantasy and/or liked her Study series, you will love this book.  I'm so annoyed that I have to wait a year for the release of book #2, Scent of Magic.  Read my review HERE.
Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare~ Cassie's best book yet!  I have never been so conflicted over a love triangle in my entire life, and that includes any that I may have been a part of!  I thought that I might like The Infernal Devices better than The Mortal Instruments after I read Clockwork Angel, now I'm sure!  Read my review HERE.

What do you think you'll read next?

The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith~ I got this in the mail last week (Thanks, Little, Brown BFYR!) and am really excited to read it!  I've heard great things about it so far!  Stay tuned!

Fracture by Megan Miranda~ One of my New Year's resolutions is to stay on top of my NetGalley books.  Out of sight, out of mind has been my problem, so I'm keeping a calendar to keep the NetGalley titles in sight.  This is the next release on my NetGalley list, and probably one of my most exciting!
Daughter of Smoke & Bone by Laini Taylor~ I finally got a copy of this for Christmas, so as soon as I get caught up on my ARCs, I'm reading this!  I've heard such amazing things about it!

Blood Red Road by Moira Young~ I've been wanting to read this but haven't gotten to it.  I just got the audio version of it from the library, so I'm going to give it a listen.  I've heard the audio is the way to go with this book anyhow.

"Waiting On" Wednesday is another fun blog event. Hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, this event gives us a chance to talk about the books we anxiously await the release of. Since there is ALWAYS a looooooong list of books I'm waiting on (I actually keep a spreadsheet), I figured this is one that I MUST do.

My post is actually late today because the cover of this week's WoW was revealed today, and rather than post it with the placeholder cover, I wanted to use the real deal and kill two birds with one stone- cover reveal AND WoW post, sooooo without further ado...

City of Lost Souls (The Mortal Instruments, Book #5) by Cassandra Clare

In Book 5: City of Lost Souls, the Shadowhunters struggle to piece together their shattered world after a betrayal by one of their own leaves them reeling.

I love all Cassandra Clare's books.  In this series (The Mortal Instruments), the books keep getting better and better as the series progresses, so I have really high hopes!  Having recently read Clockwork Prince (The Infernal Devices, Book #2), I'm eager for more of Cassie's writing, and isn't this cover STUNNING?

Review: City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare (Spoiler Free)

Publisher:  Margaret K. McElderry Books
Publication Date: April 5th, 2011

City of Fallen Angels takes place two months after the events of City of Glass. In it, a mysterious someone’s killing the Shadowhunters who used to be in Valentine’s Circle and displaying their bodies around New York City in a manner designed to provoke hostility between Downworlders and Shadowhunters, leaving tensions running high in the city and disrupting Clary’s plan to lead as normal a life as she can — training to be a Shadowhunter, and pursuing her relationship with Jace. As Jace and Clary delve into the issue of the murdered Shadowhunters, they discover a mystery that has deeply personal consequences for them — consequences that may strengthen their relationship, or rip it apart forever.

Meanwhile, internecine warfare among vampires is tearing the Downworld community apart, and only Simon — the Daylighter who everyone wants on their side — can decide the outcome; too bad he wants nothing to do with Downworld politics. Love, blood, betrayal and revenge: the stakes are higher than ever in City of Fallen Angels. (Courtesy of Goodreads)

I finished this book a few days ago and actually had to give it a few days to digest before I could write my review.  I wasn't really sure how I was feeling about it...  I mean, I knew that I absolutely LOVED this book as a whole.  It truly is the best book (so far) in the series.  As with the first three, it was engaging, suspenseful, and absolutely impossible to put down, BUT... I was extremely conflicted about the ending.  I definitely wasn't happy with it, but I didn't hate it.  That should leave me indifferent, right?  Not so much...  Shocked? Absolutely.  Slightly nauseous?  Sure.  Otherwise?  After giving it five days to digest, I still don't know how to feel.  The ending was good.  Great even.  A real cliffhanger.  One that will make me want to run right out and buy the next book at midnight on it's release date, but it still pissed me off...

With all that said, I can get down to my actual review...  I'll start by saying that this book was one of my most anticipated releases of 2011.  I read City of Bones this past summer and liked it enough to read the next book, but didn't love it.  A few weeks later I read City of Ashes, and was hooked!  From there, I went right to City of Glass.  With each book the story got better without getting overly complicated.  There were definitely parts in each book that pissed me off (especially the death of a certain young character in City of Glass), but I would have complained even more if the books were full of happy endings and rainbows, so I'm not going to complain... (The fact that I was pissed was a good thing.  A book that makes you FEEL is always a good book, even if the feelings aren't good ones.)  I re-read City of Glass to prepare and refresh for this book and I'm glad I did because this book pretty much picks right up where the former left off.

So... without giving spoilers on any of the books, I will attempt to articulate my feelings.  I loved, loved, LOVED that we saw more of Simon in this book.  He has grown so much over the course of the series, and we see a new, more mature, sexy side of Simon in this book.  He has always been one of my favorite characters and I was thrilled to see him get some of his due in this book.  There is also a new character in this book who I really took to.  He came up very early on in the series, but then we heard nothing more about him.  Until now.  I have a feeling that he is going to be a key player in the final two books (I certainly hope so).  Of course, the Clary/Jace relationship continues to evolve, but I'm reluctant to give details because I don't want to spoil any of the previous books for readers.  A character from a previous book that I thought was gone comes back.  Then there were some nice developments involving Magnus that made me happy (he's one of my favorite characters too), and we start to see more connection between The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices, including a "new" character addition to TMI who we have only seen in TID.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and give it a five star rating.  I couldn't put it down and got in trouble with my husband more than once for reading under the dinner table and "setting a bad example for the kids".  I know there people out there who hated it, but I really don't know what they expected (happy ever after? unicorns farting rainbows?).  I like the direction the story is headed in.  It was well written and it turned out to be extremely different than what I expected.  Kudos to Cassie Clare for surprising the hell out of me!

My Rating:  ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Grade Level Recommendation:  6th+  There were some pretty intense almost-sex scenes in this book.  There is also an extreme amount of violence (not gratuitous by any means, just a lot of it).  I think it's fine for middle schoolers that have gotten the go ahead to read Twilight and the like.  If parents haven't said yes to it yet, they shouldn't be okay with this series either.
